Easy To Use!
I entered the term “Van” in KE. First the software searches its database for every instance of the term “Van” it then displays them to you, you move down the list and read the definition of each, deleting the ones that don’t apply to you. In this example, the term “Van” returned five different definitions. I was looking for information about automotive vans, only two of the five returned definitions dealt with the automotive type so I deleted the other three. I then hit the “Explode” button and seconds later sixteen new phrases appeared.

Here What Came Back For The Keyword “Van”: black maria bookmobile delivery truck delivery van laundry truck milk float minivan moving van paddy wagon panel truck pantechnicon passenger van patrol wagon police van police wagon van wagon

Each entry lists its definition (who knew that “Black Maria” is a term used to describe a van that law enforcement uses to carry prisoners?). Most of the terms are familiar, but I probably would have never thought of a lot of them.

So, What did Wordtracker Return?
Next, just for the fun of it, I went over to Wordtracker and took their Free trial and input the same seed word “Van”…

What came back? Well I got Van Halen, Van Morrison, Van Wilder —but NOT a single “Black Maria” or “Paddy Wagon” in sight. The point is, these tools know nothing about the context or definition of the word or phrase you’re inputting. They simply look at the statistics for those phrases and return what they see.

…Here’s where Wordtrack Comes In Handy!
Okay, so what to do with that tiny (But Powerful) list of keyphrases that KE returns? —Exploit The Hell Out Of It! -That’s what I did, I took those terms and entered them into the Wordtracker free trial. What did I get?

I entered “Milk Floats” (That’s a particular van that is used for milk delivery), Wordtracker returned:
1) Milk Floats for sale
2) electric milk floats
3) Modified milk floats

Next, I tried “Bookmobile” Wordtrack came back with:
1) Bookmobile association
2) historical bookmobile

Now… these are actual searches that Wordtracker knew about. Searches that I would NEVER have known about had I not used the Keyword Explode Tool!

What else can Keyword Explode Do?
Search Engines are getting smarter each day. They’re beginning to be able to actually decide what a page is about and to understand the context of a web page, the SE’s use a process known as “LSI” to understand what a web page is about. LSI involves comparing all the words in a document and grouping the important words together to categorize what the page is about. It’s similar to how we humans can understand the difference between a webpage about the Seals and a webpage about the singer Seal. We’re able to categorize each by the totality of the words we see.

Well that nifty little list of sixteen words that Keyword Explode returned for my “Van” query will get you about ninety percent of the way toward allowing the search engines to understand that your page is about automobiles and not Van Halen.

KE Is NOT designed to return huge lists of keyphrases. It’s designed to return intelligent alternatives to the phrases you already have. Let’s face it, the only way to optimize a list of a thousand or two thousand keyphrases is through the use of spam generator tools. KE is kind of the anti-spam keyword generator.
