Affiliate sites can be built using a range of tools and services, depending on your level of expertise. If you’re a frequent reader of this blog, you know that I recommend building sites using Content Management Systems (CMS) –specifically Wordpress Blogs. This is because CMS have several advantages over static (HTML) websites.
First, a CMS is dynamic; changes can be made on the fly site-wide. For example, if you’re promoting affiliate products from company “A” and company suddenly goes out of business, you’ll be stuck with the tough task of finding and removing all instances of company “A’s” promotional materials. On a static site this can often mean going from page to page, removing code. On a site build on a CMS platform, it can be as easy as making a single change to a template file —a few seconds as opposed to maybe hours on a big static site.
Next, most affiliate marketers, especially if they’re just starting out; want to leverage the free traffic that search engines can give you. To do this in an even moderately sized niche requires a certain amount of SEO work. When you’re building affiliate sites using Blogs, you’re going a long way toward removing one of the biggest roadblocks webmasters face; building sites that are search engine spider “friendly”. A blog is inherently a very organized system. The site is broken down into categories and sub-categories and links are available for traversing to the entire website. Building this type of organization into a static site is possible but very difficult to achieve.
Finally, Blogs have a number of nice features built in that allow for better user-interaction. For example, you can allow your visitors to post comments on your site. This is a great way for getting people to check back to your site again and again. Also, built into Wordpress Blogs is the ability to give and receive trackbacks. Trackbacks allow one webmaster to reference a post on another website and get a link back to this new post on the original site. Another great feature is built in RSS (Real Simple Syndication). RSS feeds are kind of like dynamic bookmarks – your user can subscribe to your feed and be instantly notified whenever a new post is made —without having to traverse all the way to your site.
